    reading skill: compare and contrast

    Reading Skill: Compare and Contrast
Read this passage from Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. Then, answer the question(s).

Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three-and-twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Hermind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented, she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married: its solace was visiting and news.

    14. Which of these aspects of character is being compared or contrasted in this passage?

    A. the characters' similar values

    B. the characters' similar backgrounds

    C. the characters' different personalities

    D. the characters' different beliefs

    15. Based on the description in the passage, which of these actions would be most characteristic of Mrs. Bennet?

    A. giving a lecture at a local college

    B. replying calmly to a verbal challenge

    D. wondering what her daughters should wear to a social outing

    16. Based on the information in the passage, which of the following words best describes Mr. Bennet?

    A. sad

    Think again.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”
