    Sterile heavens

Does the sterile heavens in the text below mean a clear sky with no cloud?

We toiled on between the desolate rocks and the sterile heavens, breathing an air that became thin and painful to the lungs, as if from some admixture of cosmic ether. At high noon we reached an open pass, and saw before us, at the end of a long and vertiginous perspective, the city that had been described as an unnamed ruin in a volumne antedating all other known books.

    C.A.Smith, The Primal City, 1934

    Thank you.

    Re: Sterile heavens

    Yes, I would think so.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

    — Arthur Schopenhauer
