    The Black Plague.

For both items, circle the letter of the passage that is best written:

1A: The Black Plague was spread by infected rats. It was a highly contagious disease. It spread rapidly in the dirty, crowded medieval cities.
B: The Black Plague was spread by infected rats. A highly contagious disease it was spread rapidly in the dirty, crowded medieval cities.

I chose B for the above question.

2A: A flu epidemic struck soon after World War I. The epidemic was a truly devastating once in America. Far more people died than in any subsequent flu outbreak.

B: A flu epidemic struck soon after World War I. How truly devastating it was in America! Far more people died than in any subsequent flu outbreak.

I chose B for the above question as well.

    Thanks everyone,
    Stella

    Re: The Black Plague.

    1B is incorrectly punctuated.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: The Black Plague.

I would use the Black Death or the Great Plague, but not the Black Plague.

    Re: The Black Plague.

    "Best written"?
How could anyone say? For what audience? For what purpose?

Short, simple sentences are not bad sentences. They are not elegant, but if your readership is working in a second language or if they are intended to be translated they might be the better choice.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
