Steinmetz, a genius of the first magnitude when it came to electricity, was a failure as the head of the calculating department. Yet the company didnít dare offend the man. He was indispensable - and highly sensitive. So they gave him a new title. They made him Consulting Engineer of G.E. - a new title for work he was already doing - and let someone else head up the department. Steinmetz was happy. So were the officers of G.E. ďEvery miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.Ē

    Re: calculating department.

Accounting is not calculating. Since this is about GE, I imagine that it was various scientific/engineering calculations that were done. Without computers and software, I imagine there was a whole team of people whose job it was was to perform calculations for other people to use in their work.
