    You needn't... , do you?

    Hi

    *self-made*

You needen't do shopping, do you?/need you?

I think "need you" in the tag is OK but cannot make sure of the other. Would you help?

    Thanks.

Re: You needn't... , do you?

If I were to use "You needn't do shopping", I'd tag with "need you?" However, that construction is fairly uncommon these days in BrE. You are far more likely to hear "You don't need to do shopping, do you?"

Note that people do use "do shopping" but they use "go shopping" or the verb "shop" far more frequently.

You don't need to go shopping, do you?
You don't need to shop, do you?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

"Needn't" is rare or extinct in AmE, as well.

We use "needn't" in AusE. "Oh, you needn't do that." Not uncommon.

How would you respond if you wanted to contradict the statement You needn't do that? Would "Yes, I do" be typical? It doesn't follow logically but I wouldn't be surprised if it were used.

Re: You needn't... , do you?

I would probably respond with "Yes, actually I do" with an unspoken "... need to [do that]".

Re: You needn't... , do you?

If someone says You needn't do that, they are removing the necessity, a speaker-imposed necessity, from me, so I would be unlikely to say that the necessity still exists. I'd probably say something like Oh, but I want to.

You don't need to do that is different The necessity in that sentence may well not be speaker imposed, so I can respond Oh, but I do.
