    Re: was based on challenge

As the book and film are different things, I would use were based on challenging, or simply challenged in the active.

Did you mean "This book and the documentary film was based on challenge the basic narrative of American history that most Americans have been taught" ===>>> "This book and the documentary film challengedthe basic narrative of American history that most Americans have been taught"?

    Either
'This book and the documentary film were based on challenging the basic narrative of American history that most Americans have been taught.'
    or
'This book and the documentary film challenged the basic narrative of American history that most Americans have been taught.'
