Useful phrases for a summary of a fictional text

In my next class test I will have to summarize an extract of a fictional text. We learned some "useful phrases" like for example "According to the author...", but the problem is that you can just use these phrases to summarize a non-fictional text. Do you know now some phrases, which could help me by summarizing a fictional text?

I'm sorry, we can't help with tests or exams.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
