What is the proper word to use?

Still fighting with the TEAS (R) Examination Guide.

According to the guide two of these answers are correct, A and B. I think it is A and C, with C being in dispute locally.

Each person should return to _________home.

    A. his
    B. its
    C. their
    D. his

A, "His" appears to be grammatically correct but not politically correct (his/hers)
    B. "Its" seems more applicable to an inanimate object like a rock, but what do I know.
    C. "Their" appears to be correct but I was informed by a well-educated associated who indicated that person is singular while their is plural and the two shouldn't be combined in one sentence.
    D. No way Jose

Thank you for your assistance. I've been out of school for over 50 years now and I forgot most of what they tried to drive through my thick skull all those years back.

Re: What is the proper word to use?

A and D both say "his". Are you sure that's correct?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Re: What is the proper word to use?

"Its" is not possible there. "His" would have been the only choice considered correct until fairly recently; now, "their" is increasingly accepted.
