I'll have to give up hiking and barbecuing tomorow.

    Dear all,

Is it fine to use the phrase "give up" this way?

"The weather report says it will be rainy tomorrow, so we'll have to give up hiking and barbecuing."

I remember reading somewhere that when you say give up, you stop doing something that you have already started. If so, my sentence above may sound strange.

    Thank you

You are right that you do not give up something you have not started doing.
You can say: I'll have to give up my plans to go hiking and barbecuing tomorrow.
    I am not a teacher.

I wouldn't use give up like that.

I'd say 'It's going to rain tomorrow, so we'll have to put off hiking and barbecuing'.

I use give up like this:

'I've had to give up playing the piano — the arthritis in my fingers is getting worse'.
