    Meaning in life

I am not sure if you should write "meaning in life" or "meaning of life"? Would you please correct my sentences?

    1. Peter found meaning in life by painting and playing music.
    2. She asked herself often what was the meaning of life when you are poor and hungry.
    3. It is difficult to find meaning in life after great personal tragedies.

    Re: Meaning in life

"meaning of life" is preceded by "the", and is considered to be a single specific thing.

"Philosophy is an attempt to construct a viable hypothesis to explain the meaning of life."

"meaning in life" is non-specific and uncountable, and is not preceded by "the". You can precede it with "some" or "any" in many cases.

    Re: Meaning in life

I am wondering if it is correct to write:

He found meaning in life by reading books.
She could not find the meaning of life after her husband's death.

    Re: Meaning in life

The first one is fine; the second one is weird.

The concept of "the meaning of life" is often thought of as some hidden universal truth; a Holy Grail of philosophical or religious thought.

To many people, after a spouse dies, they no longer find meaning in their own lives (sadly).

    Re: Meaning in life

Your sentences 1 and 3 are fine, Bassim. So is 4 (if you had numbered them), but 2 and 5 do not work. See bubbha's example.
