    It is the oldest university in the world.

    Can we use "this" instead of "it"?

    If it occurs in such a context where you would normally use 'this', then it's OK. What's your understanding of 'this'?

    I was walking with my friend and on the other side of a road, we saw a university, then I said this lines.

    If it was on the other side of the road, you could say 'That is the oldest university ...'

    If you were within the campus of the university, you could say 'This is the oldest ...'

    If you were asked the question 'What is special about the University of Karueen in Fez, Morocco?', you could answer 'It is the oldest university in the world'.
