    Set store by

    Hello,

May I say, "Some cooks do not set much store by Michelin stars"?

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: Set store by

Hmm. It's an interesting phrase. You seem to have used it correctly (though I thought chefs lived and died by how many stars their restaurant got), but it's not very common in my life.

I think I'd say something like "I don't put much stock in that" rather than "I don't set much store by that."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Set store by

    You should pluralise 'star'.

    Yes, it's fine.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

    It means "give credence to."

The question mark must be outside the quotation marks. It belongs to 'May I say...?' not to your quoted sentence.
