win the barest of delegate majorities

Does "win the barest of delegate majorities" mean "win the prescribed minimum number of delegate majorities"?

And does "But had he taken" mean "but supposed that he had taken"?

    -----------
It may still be enough, Republicans say, for Mr. Trump to win the barest of delegate majorities before the Cleveland convention. But had he taken a more deliberate and less divisive approach in the past two weeks, Mr. Trumpís nomination might be inevitable, and he might be less wounded as a candidate in November.

Re: win the barest of delegate majorities

'Win the barest of delegate majorities' = win, but only just. The majority couldn't be smaller.

'But had he taken' = But if he had taken…

Re: win the barest of delegate majorities

The barest of delegate majorities means a very small majority of delegates. But had he taken could have been written But, if he had taken.... The article says that Trump would be a stronger candidate now, both for nomination at the convention and in the general election in November, if he had been more deliberate and less divisive in the last two weeks.
