short-changing yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight - and the sentence - meaning

    Hello everybody!

Sleep deprivation is brutal and I hope whether you've been short-changing yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight that you take something away from this guide that helps get things back on track.

I understand the above sentence to mean as follows:

Sleep deprivation is brutal and I hope that - whether you've been stealing from yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight hours a day - you benefit from this guide whose duty is to help get things back on track.

In the original sentence, the word "that" is a long way from the word "hope", but I think they are closely related.

What do you think of my conclusions?

    Thank you.

I think that the sentence in question may also be interpreted as follows:

Sleep deprivation is brutal and I hope that - whether you've been depriving yourself of an hour of sleep a day or eight hours a day - you benefit from this guide whose duty is to help get things back on track.

Re: short-changing yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight - and the sentence - mean

    There has been some misunderstanding.
It was me who asked the question. Could someone tell me if my reasoning is correct?
I understand the above sentence to mean as follows:

Sleep deprivation is brutal and I hope that - whether you've been stealing from yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight hours a day - you benefit from this guide whose duty is to help get things back on track.

Please answer my question, taking into account " short-changing yourself an hour of sleep a day ....".

Re: short-changing yourself an hour of sleep a day or eight - and the sentence - mean

If you "short-change" yourself, you don't give yourself what you deserve. In this case, you deserve a good night's sleep to help you in the rest of your life. Whether you're sleeping one hour fewer than you should, or eight hours fewer than you should, you are sort of cheating yourself.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

I thought "eight" meant "eight hours a day".

I suppose it depends when you sleep! Most of us sleep at night so, even though the piece said "an hour of sleep a day or eight", it effectively means "an hour of sleep a night ...". If you take "a day" to mean "a 24-hour period" from one midnight to the next, rather than "daytime", it makes sense.
