    Need have + 3rd form

    Hi,

    I have learnt that:

    You need smoke. (Not common)
    You needn't smoke. (Common)
    Need you smoke? (Not common)

Now I would like to remove my confusion by asking about "need have + 3rd form":

You need have gone there. (Is it uncommon?)
You needn't have paid the bill. (I think it's common, am I right?)
Need she have read that book? (Is it uncommon?)

Re: Need have + 3rd form

You need smoke is incorrect, as is You need have gone there.

You needn't have paid the bill is fine.

Need she have paid the bill?
is not all that uncommon in BrE

Re: Need have + 3rd form

Need is followed by to in affirmative phrases. Therefore You need smoke and You need have gone there are not merely uncommon; they're incorrect. All the other sentences are rare in AmE.
