Should we use gender pronoun "he/she" while we talk about animals?

I bought a goat last year and kept it for a couple of months, but she died because of an ailment.

Can we use "it" for animals?

The goat was ill/sick/ailing, it died.

If you knowthe sex of the animal you can refer to it as he or she. Otherwise use "it".
