    with geologists for scale

    Does "with geologists for scale" mean "geologists think that the fumarole is very large"?

    ==================
    This is a rather gorgeous fumarole on a pyroclastic deposit from the May 18 eruption, with geologists for scale. You know, catastrophic destruction makes for magnificent landscapes.

    Re: with geologists for scale

    I wouldn't have been able to understand this sentence without clicking on the source link.

    Since it's the caption of a photograph there are presumably some geologists (human beings) in the photo somewhere, providing a scale by which the size can be comprehended.

    That would make sense, but I couldn't find them.

    I'd assume that this is a description of the photograph. The geologists are included in the photo to show the scale of the surrounding land forms.

    Re: with geologists for scale

    The words refer to the picture below them. This does indeed have geologists in it.
