    What is best?

    Hi all, thanks for this valuable help.

    my question is: how to re-write the following questions using a perfect English grammar, please?

    The context:

    A building is to be constructed on the site shown below, it was decided that the expected settlement will be too large. Therefore, the site is to be preloaded before the construction of the building. A consolidation test was prepared on a sample of normal consolidated soil in the laboratory, .....
    =====================

    The questions:

    1. For preloading, a fill is to be placed for one year, what is the degree of consolidation after one year?

    2. We want this fill to result in 42 cm of settlement at the end of one year, what is the required height of fill?

    Many thanks,

    Noor

    Re: What is best?

    It sure sounds like you're grading a site (as in landscaping).

    What is the required fill height if we want it to be at 42 cm after it's settled for one year?
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Fill is a non-countable noun, so you should not use an article before it. The same goes for English grammar: write ...using perfect English grammar.

    Rather than height of fill, write fill height. (I wonder whether fill depth would be more typical for describing this.)
