    contested seats

"Democrats suffered a serious setback in yesterday's election, losing all three contested seats."

What does "contested seats" mean? Especially, I have no idea what "contested" means in this sentence...

    Re: contested seats

Contested seats are positions in a government assembly for which more than one candidate is running in an election. Most of the representative districts (i.e., constituencies) for the lower house of the US Congress, the House of Representatives, are designed so that only a candidate from one of the two major parties has any real chance of winning the district. One party's advantage is so lopsided that in many elections, nobody runs from the other party. These are uncontested seats.

It's an unusual system where (in many cases) our representatives select their voters rather than the other way around.
