Chapter 1: A Rude Awakining

CLANG! An extremely loud sound came from downstairs. So loud it left Kyle sitting up in his bed gasping for air. He leaned over on his bed, and took a peek at the alarm clock he had sitting on his night stand. It was nearly three in the morning. "What was that sound?" Kyle asked himself in a barely audible whisper. He slowly rose up out of his bed and opened his bedroom door. The tall white door made a shrill creeking sound as it opened. He stared out into the dark hallway. He couldn't see a single thing. He began to warily make his way down the hallway, but it wasn't long before he stumbled on a box. Aware that there was no way he could avoid the boxes if he couldn't see them, Kyle went back to his room, and pulled a small flashlight out of his wooden drawer in his night stand. He went back out into the box covered hallway. Cardboard boxes lined the walls in stacks of three or four, and none of them were exactly the same size or shape. The floor beneath Kyle's feet creeked almost everytime he took a step. After steping over and around all the boxes as if they were land mines, he finally found the stairs. Kyle slowly made his way down the narrow stairway, because his vision was still slightly blurred.

Kyle approached the bottom of the stairs, which went straight into the living room. A light beamed through the window on the far wall of the living room as a car drove by. The light revealed a small living room. There were few pieces of furnature that had been set out. Only a brown couch, a small television, a coffee table, and an old box piano that sat in the corner by itself. Kyle carefully proceeded into the living room. He began to think about the possibility of robers breaking into his house. It was a wise approach, Chicago is full of dangerous people. He was alone, so he had to consider the worst case scenario. He began to search the living room, trying to find where the sound eminated from. At first he thought that something had fallen on the floor. Maybe a stray item fell out off the coffee table, but everything was in it's rightful place. Now Kyle was simply confused. What could have made such a loud sound in the middle of the night? He stood still in the middle of the room for a moment, looking around the room for anything that could have possibly made the sound. Suddenly, Kyle heard a soft, resonating sound gently echoing thrroughout the room. It seemed to be some sort of ringing. It sounded to similar to a vibrating bell that had just been struck. Kyleclosed his eyes and focused on the sound and the sound alone. As Kyle continued to listen to the faint ring, it grew more and more familiar with him. He turned to the lonely piano in the corner. "Could it be?" Kyle said. He approached the lonely piano, and the sound grew louder and more clear. He opened the lid on top of the piano and was suprised at what he saw. One of the strings on the piano had snapped in half. It was an E natural string. One out of a strand of three had given away, and was rubbing on the other strings, creating the soft sound he was hearing. "How could the string just break?" Kyle asked himself. Though it was fairly old, the piano had been kept in fairly good condition. The last person that tuned it must have tightened the string too much. Or perhaps someone had spilled something on it.

Kyle lifted the broken string out of the wooden encasing of the old piano. He studied the string at the spot where it had snapped. He noticed a brownish-green color around the edges of the string. "Corrossion." he said as if corrossion were his life-long rival. "It's only a matter of time before the other strings begin to corrode." Kyle examined the rest of the strings. They seemed to be fine. How could just that one string corrode? Kyle wasn't too worried about it. As long as the other strings were intact, he was fine with just one breaking.

It was strange how one broken string could cause a piano make such a different sound. Kyle rubbed the broken string against the others. It made a peculiar yet beautiful sound. It was like a violin but slightly different. It sounded more...metalic than a violin. Kyle opened the lid covering the keys, held the peddle down, and struck the E key. He let the sound resonate, then put the broken string against the vibrating string. The intact strings collided with the broken one rapidly. He pulled the sting tighter, and the tighter he pulled it, the clearer the sound became. It sound as if a million silver bells were all being rung all at different time in a single chromatic order. Kyle almost got lost in the sound. He experimented with the strings for awhile, seeing what kind of sounds he could make. Suddenly he remembered that the first day of school was just a few hours away. Kyle needed as much sleep as he could get. He certaily didn't want his mother to find him awake when she got home.

More car lights beemed through the window as Kyle plodded back up the stairs, using his flashlight to once again maneuver through the minefield of boxes. He stepped over a few small boxes, then brushed against a collumn of three boxes, causing the one on the top to fall off, spillings it's contents onto the gray carpet. Kyle let out a sigh of frustration, and began to put the items back into the box.

Many of the items that fell out of the box were office supplies, such as pens, pencils, thumbtacks, documents, and a few rulers. "Where did all of this stuff come from?" Kyle asked himself suspiciously. He continued to stuff the items back into the box, eager to get back to bed. His rush was quickly stopped however. Kyle gazed at the floor as if he were seeing into the future. He picked up a picture frame from among the small items. The frame contained an old photo of Kyle and his father, Joseph, sitting at the old piano. They appeared to be playing a duet together. Now it was clear. The box contained all of Joseph's office supplies. Kyle's face quickly morphed into an empty gaze. He sat there on the floor staring at the picture for what seemed like eternity. "...What ever happened to you Dad?" Kyle whispered. As he stared at the picture, his grief quickly turned into anger. He threw the picture frame at the wall. The frame made a violent smashing sound as it collided with the white sheetrock wall. As the picture frame desintigrated into small shards of glass and plastic. As the picture fram was smashing into the wall, a small piece of blue paper shot out from behind the photo, and floated down to the floor in front of Kyle along with the remains of the frame. Kyle crawled over to the piece of paper and picked it up curiously. White lines streaked across it, and they seemed to form some sort of odd shape. At the top of the paper were the letters C, O, R, and A. The paper seemed to have been torn from a bigger one. "Is this a...blueprint?" Kyle asked himeself. It certainly appeared to be one. It wasn't uncommon for Joseph to make blueprints, but putting one behind a snapshot in a picture frame was unusual Joseph worked for a company that designed and repaired all kinds of instruments. After he returned to his bedroom, Kyle put the blueprint on his nightstand after studying it for a moments, then went to sleep.
