I had to wait for him.

    Hi,

I want to ask two questions.

    1: Are the following correct?
2: Can we use "had got to" as we "have got to"?

I had to wait for him.
They didn't have to go to London.
Did you have to use that toilet?

Re: I had to wait for him.

    1: Yes.
2: Not in AmE, even if you formed the sentences right. (In negative and interrogative sentences, you can't just replace to have with to have got to; see below.)

In AmE, we only use to have got to in the present simple affirmative as in these sentences:

They've got to go to London.
They don't have to go to London.
They had to go to London.
They didn't have to go to London.

You've got to use that toilet.
Do you have to use that toilet?
You had to use that toilet.
Did you have to use that toilet?
    I am not a teacher.
