    check up

Johnny went to the doctor for his check up. Given that, can we say The doctor checked up on Johnny?

    If not, can we say:

The doctor gave Johnny an exam.
    The doctor examined Johnny.
    The doctor saw Johnny.
The doctor did a check up on Johnny.
    The doctor checked Johnny.

No, because this changes the meaning- check up on is not the same as a medical examination- it is checking to see if someone's progress is OK.

With the third, I would say gave Johnny a check-up. The others are OK.
