    fruit and fruits again

    Hi there!

I have been browsing through several threads about the non- countable noun "fruit". However, I have not exactly figured out yet, how it is supposed to be used correctly, as in some cases people seem to use "fruits", as well.

As far as I know, when using "fruit" we refer to a quantity or the concept of fruit and when we use "fruits", we talk about different kinds of fruit. So it seems the context, more or less, decides about the use of the noun?

For example: Look at all this fruit on the table! (a lot of fruit) or Look at all those fruits on the table (different kinds of fruit)

or I have got many fruits in my basket (different kinds of fruit) or I have got fruit in my basket (information)

Am I right? If not, I hope you can help me our with this one!

    Re: fruit and fruits again

Frankly, it's rarely an issue (but it's been discussed here several times.) I might say that I bought strawberries or I bought oranges or I bought bananas, but I never say I bought fruit. However, I might say:

As recommended, I eat a couple of servings of fruit a day.
