I would set my phone to silent mode or turn silent mode on, but I am sure others will use different versions.

At a memorial service I attended Saturday, the host asked people to put your phones on vibrate.

That's not natural in BrE. "Vibrate" is also different from "silent" for me. I can turn off the sounds on my phone so that it only vibrates when something happens, or I can switch it to stay on but do nothing except show an alert on the screen when something happens. That's what I usually do in a situation where I don't want the phone to make any sound at all. It's amazing how loud the vibration can sound in a silent room - you certainly don't want that happening in the middle of a funeral!

Yes, I thought about that on Saturday. It was a Quaker service, too, with long periods of silence. Nobody's phone interrupted it though.

I remembered more details. The host pulled a smartphone from his jacket pocket and said "If you have one of these, please do as I'm doing now and put it on vibrate or shut it off."
