If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?

If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?

    Is the above sentence grammatical?
    I need native speakers' help.

    Yes.

Edit: And to answer the question - I'd pay a lot of taxes.

    Lottery wins are tax-free.

Perhaps in the UK, but not in the US. They're subject to rather high taxes, upwards of 40%.

Depending upon the state you live in, you may also have to pay state taxes as well as federal taxes.

Wandering off-topic here, but in fact lottery winnings are taxed as regular income in the US. Therefore we pay the same relatively low income taxes on lottery winnings as we do on salaries.

Gee, I had no idea. Lucky ol' us in the UK; I wish!

Re: If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?

Yes, but any sizable win is going to put you in the top tax bracket. Personally, I'd consider 40% high, as it would be more than double my usual rate.

Teacher's salaries tend to hover in the lower tax brackets, unfortunately.

"Relatively low" is not a good argument to make this close to April 15! (Or 18 this year.)

There's a reason election day and tax day are about as far apart as possible.

Re: If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?

    1. If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?
    2. If you should win the lottery, what would you do?

Is there any difference in meaning or style between the above two sentences?

Re: If you were to win the lottery, what would you do?

Yes. But before answering, can I quickly ask:

Do you know the differences in use between the first and second conditional types?
Did you make up your sentence number 2. on your own or take it from somewhere? If it was your own, was it meant to be of the first or second type?
