See my corrections above. As far as I know, you express condolences over the death of someone. In this case, depending on the urgency, your answer about the work to be done will vary. About his son, something like "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about that" might be enough (again, depending on the degree of confidence/friendship out of work you two have).

In addition to saying that you are sorry to hear about the son's accident, you could wish him a speedy recovery.

Yes, of course. How rude and insensitive I was!

    Absolutely true.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

When possible, it's also good to offer something specific.

    - Do you need a ride to the hospital?
    - Can I cover for you at work?
    - Do you need a babysitter so you can go to the hospital?
    - Would he like some comic books?
    - May I send flowers to his hospital room?

And if the answer to what you offer is no: Is there anything else I can do?

I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
