    Angry Basic grammar

The other day I encountered with this simple grammar problem and I'd like to be properly guided out of my confusion. So:
. Yesterday we did nothing but ________.
    (A) talking
    (B) talked
    (C) talk
    (D) had talked

Here the correct answer was the last one. I've been trying to figure out why it's correct but still without success.

    Re: Basic grammar

    Welcome to Using English.

D is not the correct answer. The person who said it was correct was wrong. Sometime the answer keys have mistakes.

What did you pick as the correct answer?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
