    Usage of was

    The boat sank quickly but unfortunately everybody was rescued.

    Why it is not was sank and only rescued?

    I hope you mean 'fortunately'.

    'The boat sank' - simple past, active voice.
    '...everyone was rescued' - simple past, passive voice.
