Question Help with an overly long sentence [Past Perfect usage]

Hello, I'm new here and I've come to seek help with one of my projects.

I'm translating (from Polish to English) an excerpt from historical book and I've got a problem with one sentence. I think it's wrong and I don't know how to correct it.

If he had been satisfied with his achievments from 1938, like annexation of Austria, if he had not started a war (or if he had stopped it after defeating Poland or France), and if he had not invaded the Soviet Union, he would have gone down in history as one of the greatest leaders of modern times the one who carried out Bismarck's plan, embodied nationalist dream of Greater Germany (Grossdeutschland), and avoided all calamities that followed.

To give you some contect, this is about Hitler. The book is exploring various historical possibilites, sort of what could have happened if the circumstances had been different. My main issue is the overuse of "if he had not" structure. I just don't know how to reduce it and still keep this in one correct and understandable sentence.
