    The researchers are eager to find out whether this virus causes the whole immune system to break down.
    Is this sentence correct? I find that “whether this virus causes…” is a little odd, and it should be “whether this virus can or could cause…”. Am I right? Thanks!

    It's good as is. The change you're suggesting would mean the same thing but be too convoluted.

    If you're concerned that it's not precise enough, it would better to just say "whether this virus can cause. . . ."

    But I don't think that's necessary.

    Other opinions, anyone?
