    saucer or small plate



    If a small plate is not originally part of a tea set, do you still call it a saucer or just a small plate?

    A saucer isn't just a small plate. It's a little plate made to put a cup into.

    That's a side plate where I come from. It's for buttering bread on. But it doesn't normally occupy that position. Perhaps, in this case, it's waiting for a bowl of noddles to be placed on it.
