to put someone in/into (the) prison

    a. The policeman put the bank robber into the prison. (from my teacher's handout)

    b. Is the drunk driver put into the prison? (from my teacher's handout)

Are the two sentences both correct?

    I think they should be:
    a. The policeman put the bank robber in (the) prison.
    b. Is the drunk driver put in (the) prison?

    Am I right?

Re: to put someone in/into (the) prison

I'm not sure that "into the prison" is wrong, but "in prison" is definitely right (in American English.)

Is the drunk driver in prison?
Has the drunk driver been put in prison?
Was the drunk driver put in prison?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
