    When John was

Would you please correct my mistakes in the following sentences?

When John was a little boy, he witnessed a fatal traffic accident. Decades later, the same scene would materialise before his eyes now and then, and the same fright would shake his body just as it had done the first time.

    I think it's fine.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
