    Make a push


    I will appreciate any comment on what means "make their push" in the sentence below. (preferably I would like to know the whole meaning this sentence conveys)

    Direct insurance companies made their push in the marketplace as the internet boom began dominating the media.

    Here it means something like 'made a strong effort'.

    The insurance companies were making a strong effort to increase their business.
