    The Direct Lines

    Hello,

I would like to ask if the lyrics below could be about a nuclear holocaust.

Cast your eyes towards the east or west
And watch for lines above your head
"Can’t say it worries me now" he said,
    "for it may never come".
    But I see direct lines,
see direct lines across the sky.
    And I see direct lines,
see direct lines across the sky.
    Laws won’t help you now
    No voice, no rights
    No governing body
    Women and children first
    and each man for himself.
    But I see direct lines
See direct lines across the sky

The Electronic Circus, The Direct Lines, song lyrics

    Thank you very much

Yes, they could. I can't think of anything else it might be about.

It could be, but I honestly can't think what the direct lines are in a nuclear blast.

I can't imagine how those lyrics are meant to relate to a nuclear holocaust.

    Re: The Direct Lines

"Cast your eyes towards the east or west
And watch for lines above your head."

I live in the Czech republic, and if a nuclear war had occurred during what we call the Cold War, I would have probably seen nuclear warheads flying from Germany (West) and USSR (East), leaving vapour trails (the direct lines) in the sky above my head.

    "Laws won’t help you now
    No voice, no rights
    No governing body."

This also could be a mention relating to an apocalyptic event (a nuclear war) where the world as we knew it ends; no rights, one will help you now and "each man for himself".

This is my interpretation of the lyrics but because I was not certain I decided to ask.

    Thanks a lot for help.

That may indeed be what the lyricist had in mind. Since nuclear missiles fly above the atmosphere (cruise missiles excepted), they wouldn't leave vapor trails -- but the lyricist can be excused for not knowing that.
