    Tainted anarchist

    Hi,

I have troubles in understanding the bold text. Can anybody help please?

"His expression seemed virginal, the eyes lowered, but I sensed the presence within them of an evil gleam suggestive of a desire to strangle and kill. There was something of the student and the anarchist in the young man - but taking everything into account, it was the student who tainted the anarchist by making him interesting; hypocrisy is such a hateful defect, though easy to find."

The Double, Jean Lorrain, 189? (translated by Olaf Stableford)

    Thanks a lot.

    Re: Tainted anarchist

Since "tainted" is in your heading, have you looked it up in a dictionary? If so, which part did you not understand?
Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor a teacher.

Anarchists are not interesting to Lorrain, but the innocence of a student trying to become anarchist is.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
