    How would you respond ti this question?

    "Can I borrow your baseball glove?"
    Would you answer "I 'd rather you didn't" or "I'd rather not" and why?

    You can only answer I'd rather not if someone asks you to do something. For example, Will you loan me your baseball glove?

    'I'd rather you didn't' makes more sense than 'I'd rather not', because it's the other person who is the agent, not you.

    It isn't very good though, because if someone wants to borrow something from you, you are in control of that situation. 'I'd rather you didn't' sounds like they are in control.
