Why 2 plural in communications systems

Is it correct that both communication and system are used as plural in the following sentence?

Internet is great since it brings together the best qualities of the communications systems that were used before and at the same time improves on their worst features.

IMO it is correct to use communication systems.

You're making a good point, but the double plural isn't wrong. It makes sense either way and means pretty much the same thing.

I agree, though, that it's unnecessary and too wordy. The sentence is a poor one generally. You don't want a system that improves on another system's worst features. You want a system that fixes another system's worst features!
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

    Start with "The internet ...".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

If the first word is normally used in the plural, and the second word has to be, because you are talking about more than one of them, then this will happen, as it does in: statistics classes, mathematics courses, communications networks, logistics planners...
