...what we suffered from was/were solved

Many of us embrace Daishonin’s Buddhism because we encountered various problems and difficulties in our lives. For many of us, after receiving Gojukai, we find that what we suffered from was/were solved

Which verb in bold should I use? Thanks.

Re: ...what we suffered from was/were solved

With "what", use "was". However, I find "we find that what we suffered from was solved" very unnatural. As soon as I read "what we suffered from", I assumed it was talking about medical conditions. On that basis, I expected it to be followed by "cured".

If it said "the problems we had", it would be "were".

In addition, there is a verb error in the first part. After "Many of us embrace", I'd use "because we have encountered".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
