    prognosticate

The mayor refused to prognosticate as to his margin of victory in the election. (quoted from Barron's 1100 Words You Need to Know)

What is the object of the above sentence?

    margin (of victory)
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

    Re: prognosticate

If 'prognosticate' is supposed to be one of the 1100 Words You Need to Know, I'd say 90% of native English speakers happily spend their entire lives not needing to know it, especially as two much more common alternatives are in daily use.
