The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages with great impact, some of which were...

    a. "The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages with great impact, some of which were almost totally destroyed."
    b. "The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages, some of which were almost totally destroyed, with great impact."
Are they both correct? Which is better? As I know, a relative clause should be put right after what it modifies, so is sentence a incorrect while sentence b correct?

    c. The business spy leaked a number of files to the oppoent company, some of which contained sensitive information about the latest development of a new robt prototype.
    d. The business spy leaked a number of files, some of which contained sensitive information about the latest development of a new robt prototype, to the oppoent company.
The two sentences are the same quesitons. Are they both correct?

    Thanks!

B and D make more sense, but all four are too wordy. Breaking each into two sentences would improve them.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

I would say A and C are incorrect. Also, other companies in an industry are not opponents. They are the competition. (Or: competitors.)

    a. "The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages with great impact, some of which were almost totally destroyed."
    c. "The business spy leaked a number of files to the opponent company, some of which contained sensitive information about the latest development of a new robt prototype."
Why are sentences a and c incorrect? Is it because the relative clause is not put right after what it modifies? My grammar teacher said sentence a and c are correct and better than b and d, because if we put the relative clause right after what it modifies, "with great impact" and "to opponent company" will be too far away, which is not good.

I will rewrite your sentence for you. Say:

The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages with great impact, and some of them were almost totally destroyed.

Please note the differences between that one and the original.

    Here is the other one:

The business spy leaked a number of files to the competition (the company he worked for). Some of those files contained sensitive information about the latest development of a new robot prototype.

    See?

Thanks! So what made sentence a and c incorrect is the relative clauses don't go right after theirs antecedents. Right?

Re: The huge tsunami hit the coastal villages with great impact, some of which were..

Well, in the first sentence, the dependent clause modifies (or seems to modify) "impact," which makes no sense and is confusing. The other sentence needed to be made into two sentences.

Yes, that's right. When you write ... some of which,... the reader has the nearest preceding noun in mind.

    How about these ones?
    a. "There are some people in the government who are trying to improve the lives of the poor."
    b. "There are some people, who are trying to improve the lives of the poor, in the government."
Are they both correct? Which is better? I am not sure where the relative clause should be put.
