the highest/tallest mountain in the world

"Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is in the Himalayas." (from my teacher's handout)
Is this sentence correct? Is "highest" used correctly? How about "tallest"? Thanks!

Both are possible. 'Highest' is far more commonly used than 'tallest' - Ngram

Mount Everest is in the Himalayas, and the ten highest peaks in the world are in the Himalayas.

I have just noticed that the Ngram I linked you to was of the highest mountain vs the tallest mountains. Sorry. Here is the correct Ngram. Tallest is not quite so far behind, but it is still much less common than highest.
