    And it shows

He always claimed that he was self-taught, and it shows, even at this supreme level of genius.

Hi, everyone! I cannot grasp the meaning of the sentence, especially the phrase in red.

    Re: And it shows

Nor can I with any certainty - I guess his genius was expressed in some way that showed that he had had no teachers. (I'm not sure how this could work, though.)

Who wrote that sentence, and about whom?

    Re: And it shows

    It shows =

    - It's apparent.
    - It can be seen.
    - You can see the difference.
    - The result is evident.
    - You can tell.
    - It's obvious.

Even though he's a genius, it's apparent that he has no training.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

How do you compliment somebody and mock that person at the same time? That's how!

And it is possible that the person is being sarcastic about the supreme level of genius.

    Re: And it shows

"Leibniz did go to school but said that most of his education was conducted at home, reading through his father’s library. He always claimed that he was self-taught, and it shows, even at this supreme level of genius. As a boy he read obsessively, following his train of thought as the fancy took him – until the entire floor of the library and all the tables and chairs were covered with opened books. The boy is all too recognizable in the man."
