Can we use the past simple?

Can we use the past simple (entered) instead of the past continuous (had entered) in the following sentence? If yes, will the meaning change?

Then, quite suddenly, I noticed a movement in the garden: someone had entered from the gate at the far end of the lawn and was moving rapidly across towards the house.

The actions 'noticed' and 'entered' happened almost simaltaneously, so is it possible to replace the past perfect with the past simple?

If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

... had entered is the past perfect.

You need it in that sentence because what the person noticed was the movement in (not into) the garden. The entry may have been only seconds earlier, but it needs to be located in that earlier past.

Do you mean that with "into the garden" we could use the past simple?

I noticed a movement into the garden is not natural in your sentence.
