Is it necessary to use HAD with an earlier past?

Is it necessary to use HAD with a previous Past.can we use had as a past tense of Have?
I researched and found that HAD is past participle and has to used with an earlier past.
So when I hear and read people using Had without a specific time frame or with a previous past it confuses me

    Please help

Re: Is it necessary to use HAD with an earlier past?

"At 1 o'clock I had lunch." "At 2 o'clock I was not hungry because I had had lunch at 1 o'clock." "Had" is both the past and past participle of "have".

So it is not necessary to have an earlier past with HAD, right?

    That's right.
