a test with many and a lot of as its options

    Hi

Would you please tell me the answer to the following test?

    I had ............................ letters yesterday.

    a. many b. much c. a lot of

It seems it has two correct options. If the answer is 'a lot of' why we can't use 'many' in this situation.

    a. and c. are both correct.

Yes. Choice c is more conversational to my American ears.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
