a test with 'much' and 'a lot of' as its options

    There was .................... rain yesterday.

    a. much b. many c. a lot of

Can we say the correct option is c because 'much' is used in negatives?

All three are used in positive and negative statements.

What does your teacher say the correct answer is?
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

It's just part of a placement test for children by Pearson Longman 2007.

Both "much" and "a lot of" can be used with uncountable nouns.
I'd use "a lot of rain" in this context.

I would use much in negative statements rather than positive ones, so the best answer for me is c).

There wasn't much rain yesterday. (Perfectly natural)
There was much rain yesterday. (Grammatically correct, but it doesn't sound natural to me)
