    the question if

    Hi,

    *self-made*

''The question if the words can be moved as a unit also shows what a constituent is and what it is not.''

I'd like to ask if I should use 'whether' after the word 'question' or can I use 'if' as well?

    Thanks.

    Re: the question if

Neither "The question if" nor "The question whether" works.

    The question of ...

However, I would put the words in a different order. "Whether the words can be moved as a unit or not shows/determines what is a constituent and what isn't.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: the question if

    Ems's version is much better.

Keeping the sentence as you wrote it, it should say "The question of whether . . . ."
