1980 was the year when my youngest brother came to the world.

1980 was the year when my youngest brother came to the world. (from my teacher's handout)

Is this sentence correct? Do you say "someone came to the world" in English? Thanks!

No, it's not correct; "came into the world" is idiomatic.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

Re: 1980 was the year when my youngest brother came to the world.

I would remove "when" and either replace it with "that" or replace it with nothing.

1980 was the year that my brother came into the world.
1980 was the year my brother came into the world.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
