Is the following sentence grammatically correct? I thought we should always use perfect tenses in sentences like that (to show how long a person has had a headache).
I had a bit of a headache since I woke.

You're close, Englishhobby. Because "since" tells us that you still have the headache, I'd say something more like: "I've had a bit of a headache ever since I woke up."

It can either be I have had (I've had) or I had had (I'd had). If it happened today and you still have the headache, use the present version.
